Strange Companions XVI
Holger looks at you with sunken eyes that seem half-focused on the past and present. When no words come, you sit, taking in the view and the odd moment, hoping the silence breaks eventually.
“These days are long and full of sorrows." He pauses, "We both know you've seen many of those. Townsfolk gone missing, some sent to work camps, Ric demanding more of us, and me, keeping a secret I don't even understand." Holger sighs, "The town is barely recognizable with these confounded dragon walls and the pervasive scent of fear and expectation. Soon we won’t even call this place home. I don’t recognize it, and I don’t like it. Almost makes you wish you could just leave and never come back."
You sit silent, waiting for more to come, something hopeful or helpful, but he offers no other words for nearly ten minutes.
“This gift, it wasn’t necessary, but it lightened my heart. Tell Rosalie thank you.”
Nodding, you realize there is nothing to do but leave and head back to Beatrix’s home empty-handed.
A flash of inspiration strikes you, and you turn around to give Holger one last gift.
