Archeology Requires Knowhow VII

With your hands free, you move to uncover your eyes. Pulling the blindfold clear from your head, you wince at the pain from a spot on the side of your head. Feeling at the source of the pain assures you that you suffered a severe hit. You decide to have Lorn check it once he’s free.

Looking around, you see a fairly plain cabin. There’s a fireplace to your right with a dwindling blaze. Straight ahead and a couple of meters away, you see a table and two overturned chairs. Partially on the table and strewn all around it, you see the supplies that you and Lorn were carrying. To your left, you see the Wodutrown brothers lying near the opened cabin door. The brothers are quite still, but appear to be breathing heavily. Behind you, you see Lorn sitting still, and a closed door beyond him.

You listen carefully for a minute and then quietly ask Lorn if he’s heard any noise coming from the closed door ahead of him.

“Nothing. It has been silence from this direction since I woke up.”

Reassured, you begin sawing at the ropes around your legs with Lorn’s runestone. The runestone cuts through the ropes surprisingly quickly, and you’re free of the chair in a few moments. You stand up and almost topple over as a wave of lightheadedness rushes over you. Fortunately, you brace your hands on the back of the chair until the wave passes. Standing fully now, you notice the soreness in your wrists and ankles. Those ropes were tight.

After pausing and listening for a few more moments, you go around to remove Lorn’s blindfold and then cut him free from his chair. He slowly gets up and you see a little of his age as he struggles.

Lorn notices the concern on your face and says, “Oh I’m all right. It just takes a little longer to recover these days. Too many leaves on the branch, as they say.”

Once he’s upright and moving around, Lorn suggests restraining the Wodutrown brothers before doing anything else, just in case they wake up.
