A Whimper II

As you’re digging, part of the hole suddenly collapses and something as dark as coal leaps out. It passes a breath away from the side of your face before landing softly behind you. You turn and stare as it shakes the dirt from its coat. Strangely, no dirt falls from its vigorous efforts. It’s a puppy, of some sort.

After finishing its attempt to clean itself, it quietly sits and stares up at you. It whimpers again, but this time the sound is softer, definitely from hunger. You find a bucket for some water and then try to think what to feed it. Maybe it would eat some of the food you packed for your lunch.
