Far Away XXXVI
The Voyage Log for the Captain of the Two Fishers
Day 160 of Leaf 84 of Branch 1342
Overnight update:
I couldn’t get any sleep. The threat of trouble coming soon nagged and nagged every time I closed my eyes. Eventually, I gave up on sleep and joined the night crew.
Apparently, George couldn’t sleep either. He came up on deck a few minutes after I gave up on sleep and joined the night crew. George brought his guitar with him and played a few songs to try and cheer the group. Unfortunately, the sense of dread seemed to be infecting all of us and the songs were barely able to cut the tension.
George must have felt it too. Instead of trying to fight the dread, he leaned another direction and played a dreary ballad of lost loves and lost homes. Just when all hope was lost, the song changed and became more hopeful. Like a small break in the clouds letting the sun peek through, this song managed to stir all of us and relieve us for a moment from our feelings of unease.
Midday update:
The Balstar signaled for us to pull alongside first thing this morning. Then, Captain Ragvin called over for a brief consultation. We discussed preparations for the storm, which had already begun to show signs of its arrival, and then we agreed upon a location to reunite the ships in case we were separated by the storm. Before returning to his ship, Captain Ragvin asked if he could tie a rope to the prow of our ship with a small storm totem at the end that hangs down to float on the water. He explained that it was for good fortune through the storm. I took a quick poll of the crew’s thoughts and all were happy for any extra luck. With that, Captain Ragvin secured the totem and returned to the Balstar.
The rest of the morning consisted of the storm growing more ferocious and Lorn losing his battle with seasickness. The increased rocking from the storm pushed him past his tolerance. Fortunately, we’re not doing much fishing today and he can try all of the crews’ ideas for managing seasickness. Hopefully something helps the poor guy.
Evening update:
We are weathering the worst of the storm now. The waves have grown mountainous and the wind is coming from everywhere. The crew is doing their best, but we are at the mercy of the sea.
